Lancome:
Pros: Some good cleansers; well-formulated scrubs; almost all of the sunscreens contain either avobenzone, ecamsule (Mexoryl SX), or titanium dioxide for sufficient UVA protection; an outstanding retinol product; large selection of self-tanning products; several excellent foundations with beautiful shades for almost every skin color; some great concealers; well-deserved reputation for mostly outstanding mascaras; the Absolue powder; the liquid eyeliner; all of the powder eyeshadows; one fantastic lipstick and automatic lip liner.
Cons: Skin care is expensive for what amounts to average products dressed up in attractive packaging; no AHA or BHA products; no products to effectively treat blemishes or lighten skin discolorations; average toners; moisturizers that are short on including state-of-the-art ingredients; jar packaging; several foundations with sunscreen do not provide complete UVA protection; the pressed bronzing powder; average powder blush, eye pencils, and long-wearing lip color; none of the lipsticks with sunscreen include adequate UVA protection; relatively unimpressive makeup brushes.
Lancome Absolue Ultimate Bx Replenishing and Restructuring Serum: ($130/1 ounce) Absolue Ultimate Bx Replenishing and Restructuring Serum promises to be a breakthrough for mature skin due to its supposed clarifying power. Those with dull, lackluster skin tones will see radiance returned, but that’s due to the mica particles in this product that simply add a soft shine to skin, which is about makeup rather than skin care.
Lancome High Resolution with Fibrelastine, Intensive Recovery Anti-Wrinkle Cream SPF 15: ($74.00 for 1.7 ounces) High Resolution with Fibrelastine, Intensive Recovery Anti-Wrinkle Cream SPF 15. In some ways it is just shocking that Lancome is still launching sunscreens that don’t include UVA-protecting ingredients, just like this one doesn’t.
For this High Resolution product, the base formula has a great texture, but it fails to impress because it has only minimal state-of-the-art ingredients.
Lancome Platineum Eye & Lip Hydroxy(a)-Calcium, Restructuring Eye and Lip Treatment: ($80.00/.5 ounce) debuts as Lancome’s version of L’Oreal’s Age Perfect Pro-Calcium Eye Cream. Lancome uses a different base formula and contains insignificant amounts of novel ingredients that L’Oreal left out.
The majority of the formula is standard slip agents and thickeners along with a couple emollients and wax. The calcium ingredient is hydroxyapatite. Hydroxyapatite is the calcium compound found in our bones and teeth. It is also used in dermal fillers such as Radiesse, and for other types of soft tissue augmentation. If you’re curious to see what calcium can do for your skin, consider L’Oreal’s less expensive version or, even better, try adding more calcium-rich foods to your diet.
Lancome Cils Booster XL Super-Enhancing Mascara Base: ($21.50) is a lash primer that really works, and is much better than Lancome’s original Cils Booster Mascara Enhancing Base. A pre-mascara, it adds bulk and length to lashes, allowing the actual color-enhancing mascara to cling better and apply evenly. What you’ll notice is more thickness to lashes than using just mascara alone. This type of product isn’t for everyone (most women won’t want to bother with two steps), but those with short or sparse lashes should give this a try and see for themselves what a difference it makes.
